According to myth, Zeus was the son of Kronos and Rhea, two of the most important Titans. Kronos devoured several of his children at birth because he was afraid a prophecy would come true, and one of his children would seize his power. In an effort to protect him, Rhea bore Zeus on the island of Crete, and gave Kronos a stone wrapped in baby blankets to swallow. Zeus was raised secretly in a cave and eventually overthrew his father, rising to absolute power. He married his sister Hera (Juno) and they would become king and queen of gods and mortals, ruling from the highest mountain in mainland Greece: Mount Olympus.
Zeus controlled the thunder, lightning, rain, and wind. Considered the father of gods and men, he had many affairs (and many children) with different goddesses, nymphs, and maidens.
