WEEKEND SEMINAR

Sunday, June 28, 2-4pm • FREE

Of Burials and Bones: Tales Told by the Dead with Dr. Amanda Blackburn, Department of Anthropology, University of Manitoba, and Archaeologist/Biological Anthropologist Ms. Jodi Schmidt , University of Winnipeg.

Who are you? Or rather, who were you? This is a fundamental question anthropologists ask whenever they examine human remains. Every skeleton tells a story, and whether an anthropologist is working on a forensic case, researching human evolution, or recovering human skeletons from ancient Greek burials, they have a common set of procedures to answer that question. By careful excavation and examination of human bones, anthropologists can derive information such as the age, sex, stature, ancestry, general health history and cause of death of a person. Through the anthropological examination of their bones, the dead begin to tell us about themselves and the world they lived and died in.

In this workshop, participants will have an opportunity to hear a first-hand account from Archaeologist/Biological Anthropologist Ms. Jodi Schmidt (University of Winnipeg) of burial excavations conducted at Mitrou, Greece. Using the teaching collection from the Anthropology Museum, participants will then have a "hands-on" introduction to basic skeletal analysis with Archaeologist/Biological Anthropologist Dr. Amanda Blackburn (University of Manitoba).
